Today the Wurm Community received two large updates. One was a new client version containing a lot of improvements and a new more slick look.
The other new thing was that the arrival of horses make people start riding and hitching creatures in front of carts. A large variety of creatures are ridable and may drag carts, but few will match horses in speed. Horses are still uncommon but have been spotted mainly in grasslands and steppe areas.
Not long ago the inhabitants learnt how to breed creatures successfully and it is to be expected that this knowledge will be essential in order to produce really speedy and reliable steeds.
In order to further increase the speed of mounts you may saddle them - and horses should of course use horse shoes!
Around lunch this friday I came to the conclusion that it was time to open up the game for global travel between servers.
The controversy this brings is that raiding parties from neighbouring servers may attack your settlements. The invaders have strong penalties and it will be an extremely hostile environment they arrive in. That does not matter much to the existing players though who often settled on the home servers because of the lack of PvP.
This change is something that I have wanted and known would come since day one, but which has been impossible due to the mingling of basic and premium accounts. I have hinted about it and written posts stating that the game would go in that direction. I did not give warning the day it happened. Not to the players, not to the staff. The obvious question is why not?
There is not one single answer to that question. The move was a mix of frustration, stress, enlightenment, timing and determination. I was not interested in discussing the decision at all. I got the feeling that it was time. It had to be done. When that happens I usually give in. I would gladly discuss things that I am unsure of but not this and not this time. It was unfortunate that it was a friday though and that I was tied up with family stuff all weekend.
Now it is done and I am happy that it is. Now we start to see how bad or good it is. I am glad that we don't have to wait until next Monday or the week after because I am eager to move forward.
Wolfram wrote to me that he was afraid that I was ripping the heart out of the game. I think that it is well put. I hear that a lot of the nice players and staff members that make up the caring core of the home servers already have or consider to quit because they just don't want to be close to PvP. I respect that and I am glad if I made the decision easy for you. It is sad since if I had given warning and discussed it a lot of you may have stayed and maybe realized that you can cope with it. Some may even have started to enjoy the benefits the change will bring.
The goal is not to remove the feeling of security on the home servers. It will be lower in many places but it is not a goal in itself.
Wurm is still not at version 1.0. I try to make this clear. I'll present some kind of roadmap soon. This had to change to get to what I always thought Wurm 1.0 needed to be. It is too early to let the vision be ruled by you the customer. I must have faith that I see things that many of you do not.
I hope that right now you assess the situation and take it for what it is. See if you actually do get raided and how bad it actually gets. If you don't do that I know you have good reasons for your decision.
Midnight, Swedish time, and Wurm was ablaze with fireworks as those Wurmians who were up and still standing danced in the villages, forests and towns.
2008 has seen much change in Wurm, not least of which has been the introduction of Boats to lake and sea, and 2009 is just stuffed with plans, at least some of which we hope to get up and running. Wurm is ever evolving, and year on year Wurmians see changes in their lives which just keeps them (and the developers) on their toes. This is the beauty of Wurm Online. It is not set in stone, it can never be "finished," there is simply far too many ideas out there that are just bouncing up and down trying to get into the game!
So, raise a pottery mug to the New Year, and lets see what we can squeeze in to the schedule!
When Christmas comes round, we like to spread a little bit of Christmas good will to all out players, who ever they are, however long they have played and where ever they come from! Wurm is just that kind of place. Of course, Santa will no doubt be visiting in the lands of Wurm, and if he visits, I am reasonably sure he may have something for the players, and that it is going to be wonderful. But just to get you all in the Christmas spirit here is a little tune penned by our own Bard of Wurm, specially for you lot!
So, what will happen after Christmas? Well, once Rolf is back and we have all shaken our selves free of the Christmas Spirit, one of our first orders of business will be to get stage one of the new sound released. We were hoping to get it out before Christmas, but, as Rolf mentioned in his blog, the one or two remaining problems were proving very elusive to track down. You know how it is; you know which tree the bear is behind, but every time you run round, it scampers round to the opposite side and nips you on the bum!
The small delay will, however, allow the Bard to sort through some of the music and maybe we can get a few little bits and pieces in there at the same time. We shall see - no promises!
In the meantime, have a wonderful Christmas - and if you are visiting for the first time, sign up and come and join the fun!
Merry Christmas from Rolf and the whole Wurmian Team!
