To start off, I want to say that the game is now stable and safe to play. Recent events uncovered some holes in the server code that have been dealt with and also I have gone through the code for more such holes and found a few that were also dealt with.
When it comes to exploits, there are a lot of rumors going around. I have taken care of the ones I have heard about and need more reports. For now the game is considered exploit free. Note that spreading unfounded rumors of exploits is bannable because it hurts the community.
The following is what has kept me busy since Friday.
The recent so called "unstable" game client supports binding actions to keys. This is and has always been a good idea since it removes the need to right-click all the time which is convenient and ergonomic.
This new feature made some server side bugs obvious since the client can send commands with unexpected targets. An example of this is that you do not get the option to DROP your body when you right click, but if you bind the command to a key you can send it.
That we find bugs like these is very good, it is expected and also intended. The effects can often be a bit serious though, especially if these bugs are abused instead of reported.
Some bugs are very obvious, easy to access and actually pretty laughable in that they should have been detected on the test server. However, there are only a few people who actually care to play on the test server and test all millions of possible combinations of items, skills and actions so these situations are bound to happen at this stage of development. Most bugs will be detected by the vast majority of players until we can afford to hire professional testers. I must give huge credit to Manny, Wollschaf and Levedara who do a great job of this though.
I sometimes understand that players start playing around with them because of the fun effects they create. Such were the bugs that the players on the wild server found this Monday.
Anyways, last Friday a player on the wild server managed to use such a key bind to drop his Body and could not pick it up again. When I tried to set the situation straight in the database I actually managed to make it worse and put items back into his inventory that he dropped long ago. Today the worst cases of that situation is sorted out.
Now, to make matters worse, on Monday some players started to use these key binds to drag and push items that do not give these options when you right-click. Such as the white altar. Basically large parts of the server became a mess because this dragging and pushing was widespread and used in all sorts of situations. So I shut that hole and rolled back parts of the database. Some accounts that were created since Monday were lost and had to be recreated. Stuff like that happens.
Because of how upset this made the larger part of the players who did not play around with these bugs I also decided to put more effort into fixing some of the bugs that were considered exploits such as mounting and then twigging away from combat.
All in all I think that this has had some good consequences. I feel confident that the server handles client input in a safe way and that the game is a lot more free from exploits now.
Thanks everyone who still remain as a player after all this and the team for putting up with the lack of communication and general confusion.
Finally - there will be no wild server reset. If you want to start fresh, go for the epic servers!
Cheers,
Rolf

Our confidence in you still goes strong Rolf.
I just hope that you can keep a straight line in going into more pressing matters such as the Religion Fix, Epic Server, Visible Armor(Which i know you will be working on with the client devs later in time) and a viable way of crossing from freedom to wild and vice versa.
Just like to say, Goodwork and welldone fixing all the found exploits/bugs with the new client and handling it the way you see fit,
Rudie.

Was there an estimated time for Epic to start? A few months, or sooner?

rolf I would love to test on the test server I pass up alot of things I find by testing in my own village, ask oracle and horton,
I am afraid to post to the other devs because if it is deemed not a bug and usable I gave away a secret that I took the time to learn, and test.
But I do pass these up, IE the cart bug being used to scale any amount of cliff using it.
however spending hours yesterday on the test server I could not find enough tools lying around to do any testing. I had huge axe so I could cut down trees, I even found a mallet, and a large and small anvil, but no pickaxe, and no carving knife, with at least those 3 items I could have created all the rest of the tools.

I'm still missing stuff and now I'm missing a chest that contained a drake set and scale set. Check your e-mail rolf. I'm also missing a writ still.

This is what I feel like each and every day but I yell and cuss at the monitor. Your ears should be on fire with all the stuff I say each and every day I either find the server down because of some issue or I discover that you have yet to fix these items issues I'm having and some how made it worse and now I'm missing more. I should get a freakin medal for having to deal with this .

Rolf, don't you think that Wurmian community is already small, we need new players, and making an Epic server would only lower wild and freedom population?

wild server may be stagnating till the religion fix, so dont pester rolf and wait for him to add this update. as for doughboy, blame xallo, rolfs plan was hoping the player base increases over the summer, and you never know epic may become very popular as it keeps changing.
